How Surrey Hospitals Foundation’s (SHF) Will Use Your Donations:

As mentioned above, SHF will use your donation towards bringing new two cardiac catheterization labs to Surrey.

  • Surrey boasts one of the largest concentrations of South Asian residents in North America. Studies have shown that people of South Asian descent can have four times the risk of heart disease compared to the general population. They can develop the disease up to a decade earlier.
  • Health professionals measure the time starting from when the patient arrives in the Emergency Department to the time when an artery blockage is opened. This is because every minute that goes by without intervention results in the heart muscle dying.
  • But Surrey is the only large city in Canada that does not yet have a cardiac Cath lab. BC Ambulance statistics for 2021 show that 1,376 patients were transferred from Surrey Memorial Hospital to other cities for care. The top three reasons for transfer were heart, stroke and pediatric specialty care.
  • Surrey Memorial Hospital’s new Cath labs will be the first ones built south of the Fraser River. This means that residents of Surrey and the surrounding communities will no longer have to cross the bridge and be subject to traffic patterns to receive care for one of the leading causes of sudden death.
  • With these new Cath labs, Surrey Memorial Hospital’s interventional cardiologists will be able to diagnose and treat problems in heart and blood vessels before they cause larger issues, such as a heart attack or stroke. And in the case of a completely blocked coronary artery, urgent intervention in a cardiac Cath lab could mean the difference between life and death.
