City of Surrey Rejects The B.C. Government’s $250M ‘Final Offer’ For SPS Transition

The City of Surrey has rejected the provincial government’s ‘final offer’ to help aid in the transition to an independent police force. The B.C. government offered another $100 million to Surrey on top of the $150 million originally offered for added costs to transition to the independent police service, but that was rejected by the mayor and council. However, according to Solicitor General Mike Farnworth, a plan is in place for the continued transition to the independent Surrey Police Service, and he’ll release more details next week on how that will work.

Minister Farnworth says he’s disappointed with the city’s position because the people of Surrey want an end to this. The government negotiated in good faith and has been rejected after the mayor and council refused to part ways with the RCMP and accept the SPS.
