Vancouver, BC – The BC Ferry and Marine Workers Union reports that a violent incident occurred aboard the Spirit of British Columbia on Saturday morning.
According to the union, during the 7 a.m. sailing from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, a shirtless man attacked a deckhand on the vehicle deck, punching and kicking them. When the ship’s second officer and security staff tried to intervene, the man ran through the galley and bit the second officer, drawing blood.
An off-duty police officer stepped in and, with help from several crew members, was able to restrain the man.
Police took the man into custody upon arrival at Swartz Bay. The second officer was taken to hospital as a precaution, the union said.
