BC elects majority-female legislature: 49 of 93 MLAs identify as women

British Columbia has made history by electing its first majority-female legislature in the 2024 election, with 49 of the 93 MLAs identifying as women. This represents 52.7% of the seats, with 31 female MLAs from the BC NDP and 18 from the BC Conservatives. According to Equal Voice, this is the first time a provincial or federal legislature in Canada has achieved a female majority.

The Northwest Territories had previously reached a female majority in its legislature following a 2021 byelection, though this shifted back to a male majority after the 2023 territorial election. On the federal level, women currently make up 31% of the House of Commons, as reported by Statistics Canada.
