The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has seized 48 firearms, 30 conversion devices, and 17,000 rounds of ammunition following an investigation in Windsor.
CBSA officials announced on Monday that a 30-year-old Windsor resident has been arrested. The investigation was led by the CBSA Ontario Firearms Smuggling Enforcement Team (OFSET).
The operation began in May and June when border service officers in Windsor, Toronto, and Montreal intercepted four separate parcels. These packages, all imported from the United States and destined for the same address in Windsor, contained firearm parts and tools used to manufacture weapons. This prompted OFSET to launch a full investigation into the illegal importation of these items into Canada.
Authorities executed a search warrant in Windsor on July 17, which led to the seizure of the weapons. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Hengwei Zhong of Windsor, has been arrested and charged under the Customs Act and Criminal Code
