Surrey City Council took a significant step towards obtaining its own charter during regular council meeting last night. Members deliberated on how a unique charter could transform the city’s approach to managing growth and development as Surrey is poised to become the largest city in British Columbia.
Councillor Linda Annis emphasized the need for a shift in mindset. “We need to start thinking like a major city,” she said, highlighting the influx of 1,200 to 1,500 new residents each month.
Mayor Brenda Locke expressed strong support for the charter, asserting that it is essential for Surrey’s future. “As Surrey is set to become the largest city in BC and an economic powerhouse, we need every tool at our disposal,”. Locke believes the charter will enhance collaboration with the province rather than diminish its authority. “This is a progressive move for Surrey, and I am confident it will greatly benefit us as we look to the future,” she added.
The city’s request for its own charter will now be submitted to the provincial government.
