According to Statistics Canada, the youth unemployment rate reached 15% in September—the highest level since 2010, excluding the pandemic years.
Andrew Fields, Head of Labor Force Survey Analysis at Statistics Canada, stated that the tightening job market is particularly affecting young people.
Fields noted, “It has become harder for new job seekers to find work. When firms aren’t necessarily hiring new employees, youth are particularly vulnerable.”
Federal data shows that the number of job vacancies that employers are trying to fill has decreased by nearly 15% compared to last year.
Trina Smith, Program Manager at Prospect Human Services, said the labor market has become “more saturated.” She added, “Applications are coming in quickly for every vacancy, which makes recruiting difficult. When so many people are looking for work, it’s hard to sort through all the applications.”
