A woman has died after being struck by a falling tree amidst a windstorm that swept through the region on Monday. The incident occurred at Island 22 Regional Park, according to the Chilliwack RCMP.
Mounties confirmed they responded to the incident, which took place around 3 p.m. local time. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim, but did confirm the woman was in the park with two children at the time the tree fell.
BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) dispatched paramedics to the scene. BCEHS later stated that while crews attended, no patients required transportation to a hospital.
The area experienced significant weather that afternoon. Environment Canada recorded wind gusts in Chilliwack reaching a maximum speed of 66 kilometres per hour on Monday, contributing to conditions where trees are vulnerable to falling.
The Chilliwack RCMP has not disclosed further details as the investigation into the circumstances of the incident continues.
