Parks Canada has issued a warning about recent wolf sightings near Tofino, B.C., urging visitors to the Long Beach area of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve to take precautions.

The advisory recommends keeping children close, keeping dogs leashed or at home, and travelling in groups while making noise to avoid encounters. Signs of wolf activity, such as tracks or droppings, should also be watched for.

If a wolf is encountered, visitors are advised not to run or crouch but to stay together, pick up small children, back away slowly while maintaining eye contact, and make themselves appear larger by yelling and waving their arms. Air horns, sticks, or stones may be used to deter the animal, and bear spray should be used if the wolf becomes aggressive.

Parks Canada notes that Vancouver Island’s coastal wolf population has been growing since the 1990s. These smaller, sea-adapted wolves can weigh up to 45 kilograms and run at speeds of up to 70 km/h.

The wolf advisory for the Long Beach area will remain in effect until further notice.
