Two businesses in White Rock, B.C., are raising concerns about what they describe as an increase in crime in their community, following a series of break-ins and smash-and-grabs over the weekend.
RCMP have released surveillance footage from one of the incidents, showing a suspect hurling a large rock through the glass door of Crystal Smoke and Convenience early Saturday morning. The store reportedly lost over $7,000 in merchandise, with an additional $1,300 in repair costs.
That same morning, the nearby David Michael of London salon also had its windows smashed. Owner David Gadeke estimates the damage will cost him between $3,000 and $4,000. Police are investigating whether the two crimes are connected.
The suspect in the vape shop break-in is described as a man wearing a white hoodie, a baseball cap, grey track pants, and brown shoes. Gadeke blamed the nearby safe consumption site at White Rock’s Peace Arch Hospital, along with what he sees as a lenient justice system that fails to hold offenders accountable. “People aren’t afraid to break in because they know they won’t be arrested — and if they are, they’re quickly released,” he said.
South Surrey–White Rock BC Conservative MLA Trevor Halford also weighed in, saying crime is on the rise in the area and the provincial government isn’t doing enough to tackle repeat offenders.
