The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) will host a public event on Wednesday for residents interested in learning more about extortion-related crimes in the Lower Mainland.
The Anti-Extortion Community Forum will explain what extortion entails, how to recognize warning signs, and what steps to take if someone becomes a target. Although no extortion cases have been reported within Vancouver, the VPD says incidents in neighbouring communities have created fear and uncertainty among Vancouver residents as well.
“We know these extortionists succeed when people stay silent, and we’re trying to break that cycle by encouraging open discussion,” said Sgt. Steve Addison.
“Our goal is to bring the community together—to inform people about what these extortions look like, how to recognize if you’re being extorted, and what actions to take.”
Majority of cases in Surrey
Most of the reported extortion cases have occurred in Surrey, where the Surrey Police Service is investigating more than 100 incidents—nearly half of them involving shootings.
Many of the targets have been members of the South Asian business community.
Kash Heed, a former B.C. public safety minister and former VPD superintendent, said the forum is an important opportunity for residents.
“I know Vancouver has structured plans ready in case this phenomenon spreads into their jurisdiction,” said Heed, now a Richmond city councillor.
The forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the South Hall Banquet and Wedding Palace on Ross Street.
