New Delhi’s envoy to Ottawa says violent rhetoric from Sikh separatists in Canada is damaging the country’s image in India and hindering efforts to strengthen trade relations.
Some Sikh separatist groups have circulated posters targeting specific Indian diplomats following Ottawa’s accusation that New Delhi was involved in the 2023 killing of a Sikh activist near Vancouver. The posters feature diplomats’ photos alongside phrases such as “Kill India.”
India’s High Commissioner, Dinesh Patnaik, said that posters showing his face in crosshairs have made his relatives in India compare Ottawa to conflict zones like Somalia or Afghanistan.
Patnaik reiterated that India denies any involvement in the 2023 assassination, noting there has been no concrete evidence for New Delhi to respond to.
