A former Victoria Police Department (VicPD) analyst, Karendeep Saini, will have her allegations of racism and discrimination heard by the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal. Saini, who worked at VicPD from 2017 to 2021, says she experienced 11 racist and discriminatory incidents and that the department and the Victoria–Esquimalt Police Board failed to address her concerns.
Her allegations include an officer yelling at her for supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and coworkers making light of Justin Trudeau’s brownface photo. She says she reported these incidents to supervisors, but no action was taken.
Although some incidents happened more than a year before she filed her complaint in 2021, the tribunal ruled they could proceed because they formed part of a “continuing contravention.” VicPD and the police board deny all allegations of discrimination.
