Vancouver Whitecaps have made the biggest signing in club history, landing German football legend Thomas Muller, formerly of Bayern Munich, the club announced Wednesday.
Muller, 35, has signed with the Whitecaps for the remainder of the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. The deal includes a Designated Player option for 2026, although financial terms were not disclosed.
The World Cup winner will occupy an international roster slot, filling one of the vacancies created by players placed on the season-ending injury list. The move is pending the approval of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC), as well as a visa and Canadian work permit.
A product of Bayern Munich’s academy, Muller spent 17 years with the German powerhouse, scoring 250 goals across all competitions and winning 13 Bundesliga titles. Despite his enduring impact, Bayern chose not to renew his contract after the 2024–25 season.
Internationally, Muller boasts a decorated career with Germany, having helped his country win the 2014 FIFA World Cup with five goals. He also claimed the Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, leading all scorers with five goals and three assists.
To complete the signing, the Whitecaps acquired Muller’s MLS discovery rights from FC Cincinnati, in exchange for up to $400,000 in General Allocation Money.
Muller joins a surging Whitecaps squad (13-5-6) that has consistently remained near the top of the MLS Western Conference under first-year head coach Jesper Sorensen. The club also reached the final of the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup, ultimately falling to LIGA MX side Cruz Azul in a 5-0 defeat.
The German forward becomes the latest global star to join MLS, following in the footsteps of Lionel Messi, who joined Inter Miami in 2023. The 38-year-old Argentine currently leads the league in scoring with 18 goals.
Muller’s arrival is expected to boost the Whitecaps’ title ambitions and deepen their offensive options heading into the final stretch of the season.
