A man was shot and killed by Vancouver police late Tuesday afternoon in the Joyce-Collingwood neighborhood. B.C.’s civilian-led police watchdog, the Independent Investigation Office (IIO), is now investigating the case.

In a brief statement yesterday evening, Vancouver police said they were responding to a report of a dispute between two neighbours around 4 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, near the intersection of Rupert Street and Vanness Avenue, they encountered a man with a weapon.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) statement said the man was shot by police and later died at the scene, despite life-saving efforts.

Police have not specified the type of weapon or identified the individual. No one else was injured in the incident.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., which investigates all instances of death or serious harm that may have been a result of police action or inaction, is looking into the case.

In its own statement, the IIO said police were called to a residential building near the intersection where the shooting occurred.

The VPD has described the case as an “unfolding investigation” and stated it will not provide further information at this time.
