Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim is set to launch a new initiative aimed at increasing transparency at City Hall. Today, he will table a motion that, if passed, would require all city council members to publicly disclose every source of income they receive from publicly funded organizations.

The motion would direct city staff to publish an annual report detailing not only council members’ salaries, but also all per diems, stipends, travel allowances, and other reimbursements. This report would also include compensation from their roles on regional bodies such as Metro Vancouver, TransLink, and the Union of BC Municipalities.

According to the motion, “transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of public funds are essential principles in maintaining the public’s trust.” Mayor Sim argues that current reporting standards are “inconsistent or inaccessible,” making it difficult for the public, media, and even fellow elected officials to get a full accounting of a representative’s total earnings.

The mayor believes that shining a light on all compensation will help prevent conflicts of interest and ensure that pay is appropriate and justified for the responsibilities of public office.

This move comes after Vancouver City Hall recently faced criticism for a lack of transparency regarding the severance pay of former city manager Paul Mochrie. However, Sim’s motion focuses specifically on elected council members and would not apply to city bureaucrats.
