SURREY, B.C. – A Vancouver Island city councillor and family doctor, Dr. Jonathan Kerr, has officially announced his candidacy for the B.C. Green Party leadership. Dr. Kerr plans to launch his campaign this Saturday with an event in Courtenay.
Dr. Kerr is a familiar face in local politics, having been twice-elected as a Comox councillor. He’s also served as a family doctor for 17 years and held the position of vice-chair for the Comox Valley Regional District.
He is the first declared candidate to replace Sonia Furstenau, who led the party since 2020 but announced her resignation after losing her Victoria-Beacon Hill riding in the most recent provincial election. The B.C. Green Party currently holds two seats in the provincial legislature, represented by interim leader Jeremy Valeriote (West Vancouver-Sea to Sky) and MLA Rob Botterell (Saanich North and the Islands).
The voting period for the leadership race is set for September 13 to 23, with the results to be unveiled on September 24. In a news release announcing his bid, Dr. Kerr stated his intention to travel across B.C. in the coming weeks. He aims to engage with voters and discuss strategies to effectively grow the party and deliver meaningful change.
