The number of vacant homes in Vancouver has fallen below 1,000 for the first time since the Empty Homes Tax (EHT) was introduced in 2017, according to the City of Vancouver.

The City stated in a release that the annual report for the 2024 reporting year shows a record-low vacancy rate of 0.49%.

It also highlighted that since its inception in 2017, the EHT has collected $194.3 million in revenue, which has been directed toward supporting affordable housing initiatives across Vancouver.

Looking ahead, vacant properties for the 2025 reference year will be subject to a tax rate of 3% of the property’s assessed taxable value.
