Vancouver Councilor Pete Fry is considering a mayoral run in next year’s election. If he decides to run, he would become the third high-profile candidate to challenge Mayor Ken Sim, joining Sim’s former chief of staff, Kareem Allam, and his former council colleague, Rebecca Bligh.
Several individuals, including Chilliwack Councilor Jason Lum, have encouraged Fry to run for mayor. Lum described Fry as a good and hard-working person.
Fry, a two-term Green Party councilor, admitted he is giving the idea serious thought. “I’m considering it,” he said. “I see a great need for leadership to move the city in the right direction, and I haven’t seen that from Ken Sim.”
Fry questioned Sim’s leadership, stating that the city has missed several opportunities, wasting time on issues like “eliminating the Park Board” or talking about “bitcoin” when real issues needed attention.
He noted that he has not set a timeline for his decision but hopes to make a choice by the end of the year. If he enters the race, it will force Vancouver’s progressive parties to make a crucial decision.
