On Wednesday, during a Vancouver City Council meeting, councillors are expected to review a staff report recommending approval of the proposed Granville Street Plan. Granville Street, once the hub of Vancouver’s nightlife and retail scene, is now lined with boarded-up windows and “For Lease” signs.
According to the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, the area’s commercial vacancy rate has increased from 22 per cent to 30 per cent in just one year. Several business owners have already spoken out, saying crime and public disorder have caused them significant losses.
Now, Vancouver City Council is preparing to consider a plan to fix the situation. The proposal includes revitalizing Granville Street with new hotels, office space, restaurants, and condominiums, as well as transforming the stretch from the bridge to the waterfront into a pedestrian-only zone.
If approved, the redevelopment of Granville Street could gradually take place over the next 20 years, reshaping what is currently one of Vancouver’s most iconic yet troubled streets.
