Vancouver: The process of revitalizing Vancouver’s Granville Street can now move forward as City Council on Wednesday approved a motion aimed at addressing the area’s current challenges. City councillors have approved the staff report titled “Granville Street Plan.”

In early 2023, City Council passed a motion directing staff to review the downtown entertainment district, focusing on pedestrian activity, increasing density, and improving safety. The proposal approved on Wednesday seeks to explore how to protect the area from street disorder and vacant storefronts and replace them with better alternatives.

The plan includes everything from a public plaza at Granville and Robson Street to a pedestrian zone stretching from False Creek to Coal Harbour. Critics have expressed concern that transit service on this road will be reduced and that commercial uses are being prioritized over residential development.

Staff say the plan “was developed with input from business organizations, residents, cultural institutions, and community partners.” City Council has unanimously approved an amendment to the city’s 20-year Granville Street Plan aimed at phasing out single-room occupancy housing in the area.

This amendment directs staff to work with BC Housing and the province to offer city-owned sites to replace existing single-room occupancy and supportive housing units in the non-residential entertainment core area with “modern, dignified, self-contained housing with strong wraparound services.”
