The Vancouver and Victoria police departments have been granted provincial approval to establish their own police training academies to support recruitment efforts. B.C. Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger said the new training sites will operate under the supervision of the Justice Institute of British Columbia Police Academy.

The departments will cover the costs of the facilities through their own budgets, and the province will review their progress after two years. The satellite academies will initially run for that two-year period and be funded by the participating police forces.

Along with approving the new sites, the government says the academy is also increasing training capacity at its main campus in New Westminster by 50 per cent, allowing up to 432 recruits to graduate each year.

Police chiefs from Vancouver Police Department and Victoria Police Department joined Krieger at the B.C. legislature for the announcement.
