The federal union representing Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) employees has launched an online campaign to protest staff cutbacks.
Marc Brière, the national president of the Union of Taxation Employees, stated that the layoff of approximately 3,300 call centre employees last year led to delays, long wait times, and dropped calls. He claims that a large portion of calls to the CRA go unanswered due to the low number of staff, which is why the campaign is named “Canada On Hold.”
“The last round of cuts was this past May; they let go of 1,300 members, and it has had a very bad effect on the lines and the services provided to people,” Brière said.
He added that the campaign’s main goal is to urge the government to stop the cuts, save call centre jobs, and re-hire employees, as the current staff level is “very low” and services have been “severely affected.”
The number of CRA employees increased from 44,000 in 2019 to about 59,000 in 2024, but by 2025, it has dropped to approximately 52,500.
