Unifor Local 114 has formally filed papers to begin negotiations for a collective agreement with Amazon at its Delta B.C. facility, known as “YVR2.”
The move follows the election of a Bargaining Committee by Unifor members earlier this month, signaling a significant step toward securing a contract.
Despite the formal steps toward bargaining, Unifor is accusing the retail giant of continuing to interfere with the process. The union states that Amazon is “waging a misinformation war against its own employees on the shop floor,” even after receiving repeated rebukes from the B.C. Labour Relations Board (BCLRB) for abusing and interfering in the unionization process.
Unifor National President Lana Payne expressed strong sentiment regarding the company’s resistance. “It is a difficult pill to swallow for Amazon to accept that workers have basic workplace rights in British Columbia,” Payne said. “The sooner Amazon recognizes that YVR2 workers deserve respect, the sooner we can get to the business of free and fair collective bargaining.”
The Bargaining Committee has begun preparing proposals based on a September survey that identified key workplace priorities for YVR2 employees. The top concerns flagged by workers include workload, speed-ups and rampant favouritism.
“It’s an exciting time to be an Amazon worker in the Metro Vancouver region,” said Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle. He added that the bargaining at YVR2 and ongoing unionization activity at several other nearby fulfillment centers demonstrate that unions are the best way to improve work life, and that B.C.’s progressive unionization laws are a vital tool for working people.
The announcement follows a meeting on October 16 where B.C. Premier David Eby and Minister of Labour Jennifer Whiteside met with a group of YVR2 workers at the Unifor offices in New Westminster.
