An Air India passenger plane bound for Gatwick, United Kingdom, with 242 people on board, crashed just five minutes after taking off from the airport on Thursday in India’s northwestern city of Ahmedabad. Officials have stated that there is no possibility of any survivors.
Following the crash, a blast and black smoke were seen billowing from the site where the plane went down in a populated area near the Ahmedabad airport.
Reports indicate that the plane crashed on top of the dining area of a medical college hostel, and a video showed a portion of the aircraft atop the building. It was unclear if any medical students were present inside the building at the time of the crash.
The United Kingdom’s airport confirmed that the flight was bound for London’s Gatwick.
Air India stated in a social media post that in addition to 169 Indian nationals, there were 53 British citizens, 7 from Portugal, and one Canadian citizen on board.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his deep sadness upon hearing about the Air India flight crash. Carney stated that Canadian transportation officials are in contact with their counterparts and are receiving regular updates on the situation.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the accident as “heartbreaking beyond words.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement, “The scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating.”
