The U.S. Senate has passed a bill to rescind American tariffs imposed on Canada. This development comes as U.S. President Donald Trump is engaged in trade talks in Asia and is simultaneously involved in an increasingly sharp trade dispute with America’s northern neighbor, which is one of its largest economic partners.

The 46 to 50 vote in favor of the measure is the latest in a series of votes this week aimed at ending the national emergencies used by Trump to impose tariffs.

Although these motions are non-binding and will ultimately not take effect, they have proven to be an effective way for Democrats to highlight the division between the President’s trade policy and Republican Senators, who have traditionally supported arguments for free trade.

In February, Trump announced a 25% tariff on Canadian imports under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which led to retaliatory tariffs from Ottawa. Then, in August, Trump increased the tariffs on Canada to 35%. Last week, Trump announced an additional 10% tariff on Canada following an anti-tariff advertisement broadcast by the Ontario provincial government.
