The bodies of two snowmobilers have been recovered from a frozen lake in northwestern British Columbia, several days after they were reported missing, police say.
According to the Anahim Lake RCMP, the pair were reported missing on Feb. 20 after they had not been seen since Feb. 17. Neighbours began searching and discovered the couple beneath the ice on Charlotte Lake.
Investigators believe the couple and their snowmobiles broke through the ice on Feb. 17. Police said that because the missing persons report was delayed, the lake had time to refreeze, hiding any visible break in the ice.
Members of the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team, trained in ice diving, were deployed to the scene Sunday and recovered the bodies.
The victims have been identified as a 65-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman from 100 Mile House.
Sgt. Scott Clay, detachment commander of the Anahim Lake RCMP, warned that fluctuating temperatures can significantly increase the dangers of travelling on frozen lakes and rivers, urging the public to exercise extreme caution.
The BC Coroners Service is investigating the deaths. Police say criminality is not suspected.
