A joint investigation involving the Edmonton Police Service has resulted in the deportation of two men accused of being linked to a series of extortion cases targeting the city’s South Asian community.

Police, alongside the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Lower Mainland District and the Canada Border Services Agency, shared details during a Thursday news conference.

The CBSA said a 22-year-old man, alleged to be a key figure behind the extortion activity in Edmonton, has been deported. A 25-year-old man was also removed from Canada, while three additional individuals remain under investigation. Authorities have not released the identities of the suspects or the countries they were deported to.

Officials added that some suspects may be connected to similar extortion cases in Calgary, B.C.’s Lower Mainland, and Ontario.

Police say a broader criminal network involving 51 suspects is believed to be behind the extortion activity in Edmonton. Superintendent Robinder Gill noted the investigation follows a rise in extortion cases after Project Gaslight concluded in 2024.

Police say 51 more suspects have been connected to the criminal network behind the extortion cases, and investigations and enforcement actions are ongoing. Authorities will continue referring cases to the CBSA for immigration-related matters.

During the investigation, officers also seized four vehicles and nine firearms.
