The tsunami advisory issued for coastal areas of British Columbia following a massive underwater earthquake off the coast of Russia has been cancelled by the provincial government.
The initial advisory had projected tsunami waves of less than 30 centimetres to hit Tofino around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. While the advisory was in effect, British Columbians were urged to stay away from coastal areas. The District of Tofino had also closed its beaches, and the province’s emergency information agency warned of strong waves and currents.
Chile on High Alert as Other Regions Downgrade Warnings
However, the situation is escalating in South America, where Chile has upgraded its tsunami warning to the highest level. Chile reports that hundreds of people are being evacuated, even as warnings are being lifted or downgraded in parts of Russia, Japan, and the United States.
The powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for frequent seismic activity where most of the world’s earthquakes occur.
