U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order today imposing a 25% tariff on imported medium- and heavy-duty trucks starting November 1, with an exemption for vehicles traded under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

Trucks that comply with CUSMA will face tariffs only on non-American parts. The new duties will not apply to auto parts that meet the North American trade agreement requirements for now.

In addition, a 10% tariff will be applied to buses and motorcoaches.

Trump had threatened these heavy truck tariffs last month, saying they aim to protect American industry from foreign competition.

The American Trucking Association has opposed the move, warning it could raise prices in an industry already affected by steel tariffs.
