U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he may “substantially” raise tariffs on India within the next 24 hours. Trump’s statement follows his earlier vow to increase tariffs on India due to its purchases of Russian oil and other military products.

Speaking with CNBC, Trump reiterated his claim that India has the world’s highest tariffs on U.S. goods. “India has not been a good trading partner because they do a lot of business with us, but we don’t do business with them,” said Trump. He added that India is “fueling the war machine” by buying Russian oil, and that he “will not be happy” if this continues.

Meanwhile, Russia has condemned Trump’s threat, stating that such remarks against its trading partners will be seen as “threats” against Moscow.

In response to Trump’s warning, the Indian government issued a strongly worded statement, labeling the U.S. threats as “unjustified and unreasonable.” In a formal rebuttal from the Ministry of External Affairs, India also accused the U.S. and the EU of unfairly targeting New Delhi while they themselves continue to trade with Russia.
