U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a broad and pointed speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, repeating his interest in taking control of Greenland and sharply criticizing Canada’s relationship with the United States.

His remarks followed a speech by Prime Minister Mark Carney a day earlier, in which Carney warned that middle powers were facing a global rupture, as major powers increasingly use economic ties as tools of pressure. Trump appeared irritated by those comments, suggesting Canada depends on the United States for its survival and accusing it of benefiting unfairly from U.S. support. He said Canada receives numerous advantages from the United States and should show greater appreciation.

Meanwhile, Greenland’s government released new public guidance on how residents should prepare for a potential crisis, amid Trump’s repeated statements about seizing the territory from Denmark, a U.S. ally. The brochure advises people to stockpile essentials, including several days’ worth of food and water, as well as basic supplies such as toilet paper, battery-powered radios, and equipment for hunting and fishing.

California Governor Gavin Newsom weighed in on the Davos discussions, saying he found Prime Minister Carney’s remarks effective, and expressed similar praise for the speech delivered by French President Emmanuel Macron.
