U.S. President Donald Trump claimed Monday that taking Tylenol during pregnancy is linked to autism, a statement widely disputed by medical experts.

Speaking at a White House event, Trump also promoted leucovorin—a form of folic acid—as a potential treatment for autism symptoms. His remarks coincided with an FDA notice in the Federal Register announcing renewed approval of a GSK-made version of the drug, previously withdrawn, for a condition associated with autism.

The FDA cited studies involving 40 patients with cerebral folate deficiency, a rare metabolic disorder that can cause neurological issues, some resembling autism symptoms.

Trump said the FDA would alert doctors about what he described as a “very increased risk” of autism from Tylenol use during pregnancy, though he provided no evidence. “Taking Tylenol is not good,” he said. “You shouldn’t give the child a Tylenol every time he gets a shot.”

Medical researchers stress there is no proven link between Tylenol and autism. While leucovorin, also used in cancer treatment, has shown limited promise in small studies, experts emphasize that larger clinical trials are needed.

Tylenol is produced by Kenvue, the consumer health company spun off from Johnson & Johnson in 2023. On Monday, the company rejected Trump’s claims, saying the suggestion of a connection to autism “is not based in science.”
