Prime Minister Mark Carney was in Washington today for his second meeting at the White House.
U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged that the fentanyl crisis will “never be over,” but said Canada is handling it “much better.” He also made a few jokes about Canada becoming the “51st state,” calling it a possible “merger.”
Trump praised Carney as a “world-class leader” and a “tough negotiator.” However, trade talks have largely stalled since their last meeting, with new U.S. tariffs placed on Canadian goods.
Carney is expected to push for relief from American steel tariffs but has avoided stating specific targets publicly. Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has increased political pressure, writing in a letter to Carney: “No more losing. It’s time for you to deliver the promised wins.”
There were many laughs in front of the camera, but now the serious work resumes.
Team Canada and Team U.S.A. are headed behind closed doors for meetings and a working lunch. Trump has set the expectation that Carney and co. could leave happier than they came, but the Canadian side knows nothing is certain until it’s signed in Sharpie.
Canada–U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc described today’s White House discussions as “substantive,” but announced no progress on a deal or tariff relief, adding that negotiations will continue.
