U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a new Board of Peace aimed at maintaining the ceasefire in the Israel–Hamas war and shaping Gaza’s future, positioning the body as a global initiative that could eventually rival the United Nations. The announcement, made at the World Economic Forum, comes despite several close U.S. allies declining to participate over concerns about the board’s scope and its potential to undermine the UN.
The board, initially planned as a small oversight group, has expanded into a broader international effort, with the Trump administration saying 59 countries have signed on, though officials from only 19 countries attended the launch. A new U.S.-supervised technocratic authority for Gaza was also highlighted, with its leader announcing that the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt is expected to open soon.
While Trump has suggested the board could one day replace some UN functions, he later said it would work alongside the organization. Countries including France, Norway, and Sweden have opted out, while others such as Canada, China, and Russia have yet to commit. Israel has agreed to participate, and discussions with other global leaders, including Ukraine’s president, continue as broader diplomatic tensions remain unresolved.
During the signing ceremony ,Trump framed Gaza in terms of its development potential, saying that as a real estate professional he views it as a prime seaside location and a beautiful property that could be transformed, arguing that such development would greatly improve living conditions for people currently living in poverty.
