WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday that his administration is immediately ceasing all trade talks with Canada.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump cited Canada’s new “Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies” as the reason for shutting down negotiations. He explicitly called it “a direct and blatant attack on our Country.”
This announcement throws a major wrench into ongoing trade discussions between the two North American nations, which have been locked in a trade war for months. Both countries have imposed tariffs on each other, despite expressing optimism in recent weeks that a deal was on the horizon.
Trump’s post also indicated forthcoming retaliatory measures, stating, “We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period.”
