U.S. President Donald Trump has condemned the decision by Canada and other nations to recognize a Palestinian state, arguing the move rewards Hamas for the “horrible atrocities” of its October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York this morning, Trump said, “the rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists for their atrocities.” He urged “those who want peace” to unite and demand that Hamas release its hostages.

Earlier this week, Canada joined the United Kingdom, Australia, and Portugal in recognizing an independent Palestinian state ahead of this week’s UN meetings.

Trump also criticized the international body itself, saying it is full of “empty words” that “don’t solve wars.”

In a separate interview, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he is not concerned that the U.S. will become more isolated after more than 150 countries recognized Palestinian statehood. Rubio added that countries like the U.K. and Canada will not play a significant role in ending the conflict in Gaza.
