U.S. President Donald Trump believes a trade deal with Canada is “achievable” if both countries agree, though he did not provide a timeline for how long it might take to strike one and get the tariffs he has imposed on Canada removed.

“It’s achievable but both parties have to agree,” Trump said.

The president made the remarks standing next to Prime Minister Mark Carney, ahead of an expanded bilateral meeting between the two countries. He was asked by reporters in the room whether a deal is possible, and what the key sticking points so far might be.

“I have a tariff concept, Mark has a different concept which is something that some people like,” he said. “We’re going to see if we can get to the bottom of it today. I’m a tariff person, I’ve always been a tariff person. It’s simple, it’s easy, it’s precise, and it just goes very quickly and I think Mark has a more complex idea, but also very good.”
