United States President Donald Trump announced today that the U.S. will impose a 25% tariff on imports from India starting August 1. In a series of posts on Truth Social, President Trump also stated that India would face additional penalties for its ongoing purchases of oil and military equipment from Russia, particularly in light of the conflict in Ukraine.

President Trump criticized India’s trade policies, asserting that despite being a friend, India has “comparatively done very little business” with the U.S. due to its “far too high” tariffs, which he described as among the highest in the world. He further highlighted what he called India’s “strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers.”

“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country,” Trump wrote.

The President also took aim at India’s continued relationship with Russia, stating, “Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!”

He concluded by declaring, “INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST.”

In a separate post, President Trump reiterated his concern about the “massive trade deficit” the U.S. holds with India. This announcement comes amidst ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade deal between the two nations, which have reportedly faced stalemates over various issues, including market access for U.S. agricultural and dairy products.
