U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation imposing a 50% tariff on certain copper imports, citing national security concerns, according to the White House.

Effective August 1, the new tariff will apply to semi-finished copper products and copper-intensive derivatives, the White House stated in a fact sheet. However, the tariff will not apply to copper scrap or raw copper materials such as ores, concentrates, mattes, cathodes, and anodes. The move follows a national security review under Section 232, initiated by Trump in February.

In addition to the tariffs, the proclamation includes measures to support the domestic copper industry, such as mandating that 25% of high-quality copper scrap produced in the U.S. be sold domestically.
