A murder trial for three Surrey men is set to begin Monday, Jan. 12, in Abbotsford, in connection with the 2022 double homicide of a senior couple.

Khushveer Toor, Gurkaran Singh, and Abhijeet Singh, all from Surrey, were each charged in December 2022 with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Arnold and Joanne De Jong. Arnold, 77, and Joanne, 76, were found dead on the morning of May 9, 2022, in their home on Arcadian Way, a rural road in east Abbotsford.

Police announced the charges on Dec. 16, 2022, noting that one of the accused knew the De Jongs, though the details were unclear. The couple’s cause of death has not been released.

The case has faced multiple delays. At one point, Toor’s trial was scheduled separately from his co-accused, but the three men are now set to be tried together. The trial is expected to last eight weeks in B.C. Supreme Court in Abbotsford.

Also starting Monday is the trial of Jagpreet Singh, charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife, Balwinder Kaur, 41, on March 15, 2024. Police responded to an ongoing assault at a home on Wagner Drive, where Kaur was found with life-threatening stab wounds and later died in hospital. Singh was arrested at the scene, and charges were announced the following day. His trial is scheduled to last six weeks, also at B.C. Supreme Court.
