A traveler bound for Hong Kong was arrested at Vancouver International Airport after Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers seized 29 kg of methamphetamine from their luggage on July 18.
The drugs were found concealed within two suitcases in “gift-wrapped packages” that the CBSA estimates represent approximately 150,000 individual doses.
Shiyu Deng, a 25-year-old citizen of China, was arrested and has been charged with several offenses under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, including possession for the purpose of trafficking and exporting a controlled substance. Deng was remanded until their next court appearance on August 6, 2025.
“Every day they strive to ensure our borders are secure, Canadians are protected, and transnational crime groups are disrupted,” said Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety, praising the CBSA officers.
Nina Patel, Regional Director General for the CBSA’s Pacific Region, called the seizure “another great example of the dedication and expertise of CBSA officers.”
David Teboul, Assistant Commissioner with the RCMP Federal Policing – Pacific Region, highlighted the strong partnership, stating, “Their vigilance and our officers’ swift investigative response led to an individual being arrested and charged.”
