WestJet has confirmed that a cyberattack earlier this year resulted in the theft of some personal data, including information about travel documents like passports. However, credit and debit card numbers, as well as user passwords, were not compromised.
In a notice to customers, WestJet explained that the specific personal information taken varies by individual but may include details such as name, date of birth, email address, mailing address, phone number, gender, and recent travel booking history including booking reference numbers.
The stolen data may also contain information related to passengers’ travel documents used with WestJet, such as passports or other government-issued IDs, along with other personal details.
WestJet warned that the stolen information could be exploited for identity theft or fraud and is offering affected customers free identity theft protection and monitoring services for 24 months.
The airline detected suspicious activity on its systems on June 13 and discovered that criminals had temporarily gained access to some of its systems.
Canada’s privacy commissioner’s office has launched an investigation into the breach.
