TransLink’s new Mark V SkyTrain has officially begun operations, with the first of 47 new trains making its inaugural journey on the Expo Line on Thursday. The remaining 46 trains are set to be introduced over the next four years.
TransLink spokesperson Anita Bathe highlighted the strategic importance of the new fleet. “They’re also really key in making sure that we’re ready for the Broadway Subway and for the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension,” Bathe stated.
She added, “For the next couple of years, these trains are going to play a key role in really getting our system ready for the future, as our ridership continues to grow and is expected to grow even more.”
The Mark V trains first arrived in Burnaby in 2023, where they underwent rigorous testing by the transit authority. With ridership projected to jump by 20 percent on the Expo Line and by as much as 50 percent on the Millennium Line by 2030, TransLink believes the timing of this new fleet couldn’t be better.
