VANCOUVER, B.C. – Metro Vancouver’s transit authority, TransLink, is touting its recent surge in fare enforcement as a major cost-saving success, reporting an additional $3.2 million in revenue over a six-month period.
TransLink, which has been grappling with financial constraints, stated that this heightened fare enforcement was part of a $90 million package of cost-saving measures announced last year.
In the latter half of 2024, the transit authority significantly ramped up its fare enforcement checks. This initiative led to a noticeable increase in the number of passengers purchasing regular fares instead of concession fares, such as those offered to seniors and youth.
According to TransLink, this revenue boost amounted to roughly $500,000 per month. The organization is now on track to surpass the cost savings it initially projected from the intensified fare enforcement efforts.
