Three vehicles rang in the new year from an impound lot after their drivers were all caught excessively speeding on the Sea to Sky Highway in a single day, B.C. Highway Patrol says.
The first two incidents happened late on the morning of Dec. 30, when officers spotted a rented Volkswagen and a Subaru travelling far faster than surrounding traffic near Porteau Cove. According to police, the Subaru driver claimed he sped up because the Volkswagen was tailgating him, while the tourist driving the rental Volkswagen said he was trying to get ahead at the end of the merge lanes so he could make it to the airport.
Officers recorded the Volkswagen at 154 km/h and the Subaru at 149 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
“Merge lanes aren’t the place to compete,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin. “At best, you might save a few seconds. At worst, you could cause a serious crash — or spend hours dealing with your vehicle being impounded. If you want to save time, leave earlier and follow the speed limit.”
Later that day, police pulled over a yellow Porsche going 168 km/h in the same stretch. The driver reportedly asked officers to “be considerate” because it was her birthday.
All three drivers received tickets for excessive speeding — a $483 fine — had their vehicles impounded for seven days, and will face at least three years of high-risk insurance premiums.
“Our job is to keep roads safe,” McLaughlin said. “If you drive inconsiderately, you’ll face the consequences, no matter the occasion.”
