Three miners trapped for more than 60 hours underground in a remote northern British Columbia mine have been successfully rescued.
Newmont Corp., the operator of the Red Chris mine, confirmed that Kevin Coumbs, Darien Maduke, and Jesse Chubaty – all contractors for B.C.-based Hy-Tech Drilling – were safely brought to the surface around 10:40 p.m. on Thursday. The company reported that all three were in good health and spirits after being trapped by two rockfalls that occurred on Tuesday morning.
“This was a carefully planned and meticulously executed rescue plan,” Newmont stated in a press release.
The miners had continuous access to food, water, and air within a refuge chamber inside the gold and copper mine, located approximately 500 kilometers northwest of Terrace, B.C.
The rescue operation involved the use of drones and a remote-controlled scoop, which was instrumental in clearing a massive rockfall estimated to be 20 to 30 meters long and seven to eight meters high.
“Upon reaching the refuge chamber, the team found Kevin, Darien, and Jesse in stable condition,” Newmont added.
