Three suspects are in custody and two vehicles have been seized following a targeted shooting and an attempted arson in Surrey early Sunday morning. Authorities believe the incident is linked to a wave of extortion-related violence currently plaguing the region.
According to the Surrey Police Service (SPS), officers from the anti-extortion team were patrolling the Crescent Beach area around 3:50 a.m. when they were alerted to gunfire and a “small fire” outside a residence near Crescent Road and 132 Street.
Police quickly engaged in a pursuit of a suspect vehicle. The three occupants eventually abandoned the car and attempted to flee on foot. They were apprehended a few blocks away near 140 Street and 28 Avenue while attempting to board a rideshare vehicle to escape.
Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton confirmed that while the fire caused minimal damage, the home sustained significant damage from the gunfire. Residents were inside the house at the time of the attack. Although the family has been left deeply shaken by the experience, fortunately, no physical injuries were reported.
The SPS Major Crime Section has taken over the investigation. Investigators are currently processing physical and digital evidence to confirm the suspects’ direct involvement in the shooting. While the three individuals remain in custody, no official charges have been laid at this early stage of the investigation.
Police emphasized that this incident appears to be tied to ongoing extortion threats in the community. The SPS is working closely with law enforcement partners, including the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), as the investigation continues.
