A 17-year-old has been taken into custody in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old boy in downtown Vancouver over the weekend, authorities report.

According to the Vancouver Police Department, the teen suspect, a resident of Surrey, turned himself in to an officer in East Vancouver on Monday night. He remains in custody, though no charges have been formally laid yet, and the investigation is ongoing, police said in a brief statement. Officials have not disclosed any potential connection between the suspect and the victim. However, police previously stated that the stabbing followed a “violent altercation.”

The victim, also from Surrey, has not been publicly identified. He was discovered with fatal stab wounds on Howe Street, near the Law Courts, around 11:40 p.m. Saturday by a passerby who called 911, according to police.
