The Immigration Department has proposed extending the current freeze on most private refugee sponsorship applications for an additional three years in order to reduce the backlog.

Last November, the federal government surprised refugee advocates by abruptly halting approvals of resettlement applications submitted by community groups for a one-year period.

According to a memorandum obtained by The Canadian Press through access-to-information laws, the pause could be prolonged until late 2028 if Ottawa intends to fully clear the application backlog.

Immigration Minister Lena Diab and her department have not yet confirmed whether the freeze will end later this year as originally planned, or be extended for another three years.
